Cost basis today
Compiled by SBZ from public blockchain data. Updated every few hours.
The average price at which bitcoin last moved: for all coins, for coins moved in the last ~5 months (short-term holders) and for older coins (long-term holders). The short-term cost basis is a widely watched support level; past bear markets bottomed near the long-term one.
What is the realized price?
The realized price values every bitcoin at the price it last moved on the blockchain, then averages it across all coins. Because most coins last moved when they were bought, it approximates what holders paid on average: the market’s cost basis.
Short-term and long-term holders
Splitting coins by age gives two more cost bases. Short-term holders are coins that moved in roughly the last five months, mostly recent buyers. Long-term holders are older coins, held by investors who have sat through volatility. The short-term holders’ cost basis is one of the most watched levels in the market: when price is above it, recent buyers are in profit and dips tend to be bought; below it, they are at a loss and selling pressure often rises.
What the history shows
From October 2025 to August 2026, Bitcoin spent most of its time below the short-term holder cost basis, a typical bear-phase pattern, before reclaiming it in August 2026. Deep bear markets have bottomed near or below the long-term holder cost basis, as in late 2022, when price fell close to the all-holder realized price of about $20,000.
