Top 10 Bitcoin holders

Corporate Bitcoin treasuries

Since 2020 a growing number of listed companies hold bitcoin on their balance sheet, some as their main strategy. Together, public companies now hold more than a million bitcoin, around 6% of all bitcoin that will ever exist. Strategy (formerly MicroStrategy) is by far the largest holder.

Governments

Governments hold bitcoin mostly from law-enforcement seizures, and a few, such as El Salvador and Bhutan, through deliberate purchases or mining. Together they hold around 3% of the supply. Government figures are estimates and approximate.

Why it matters

Coins held by treasuries and governments are largely off the market, which tightens the supply available to trade. Large purchases, and any decision by a government to sell or to keep its holdings as a reserve, can move the market.
