What is the Bitcoin halving?

Every 210,000 blocks, about every four years, the number of new bitcoin paid to miners for each block is cut in half. This “halving” is written into Bitcoin’s code and is what limits the total supply to 21 million coins.

The reward started at 50 bitcoin per block in 2009. After the April 2024 halving it is 3.125 bitcoin, and at the next halving, at block 1,050,000, it falls to 1.5625. New supply then drops from about 450 to about 225 bitcoin per day.

How the date is estimated

A halving happens at a block number, not on a calendar date. We take the current block height from the blockchain and assume one block every ten minutes, Bitcoin’s target, for the blocks that remain. Blocks have recently come slightly faster than ten minutes, so the actual date can land a few weeks early.

Why it matters

Each halving reduces the flow of new coins that miners typically sell to cover their costs. Past halvings were followed by strong bull markets 12 to 18 months later, but other forces, from interest rates to ETF demand, also drive price, and history does not guarantee a repeat. For miners, a halving cuts revenue per block in half overnight, which pushes out the least efficient operators.

Frequently asked questions

When is the next Bitcoin halving?

The next halving happens at block 1,050,000, expected around April 2028. The exact date depends on how fast blocks are found; the live estimate at the top of this page updates every hour.

What will the block reward be after the 2028 halving?

It falls from 3.125 to 1.5625 bitcoin per block, cutting new supply from about 450 to about 225 bitcoin per day.

How many halvings are left?

Four halvings have happened (2012, 2016, 2020 and 2024). The reward keeps halving until it rounds down to zero, after 33 halvings in total, so 29 remain. The last fraction of a bitcoin is expected to be issued around 2140.

Does the halving make the Bitcoin price go up?

Past halvings were followed by large price rises within about 12 to 18 months, as new supply fell while demand held up. But the sample is small and many other factors move the price, so a halving is not a guarantee of gains.
