Markets

Bitcoin ended the week near $83,799, down 1.8%, after briefly testing lows around $82,500 as Iran-related oil-strike worries and a bond sell-off pressured risk assets. Ether fared worse, down 6% to $2,539, as Bitmine signalled it would end its steady ether-buying programme and ETF outflows extended to a ninth day. Total market capitalisation slipped 3.5% to $2.83T, with Bitcoin dominance rising to 59.4% as altcoins underperformed the majors. Liquidations reached $547 million mid-week on the oil-driven selloff, with a separate report citing $1.1 billion in liquidations as speculators moved 55,000 BTC to exchanges. Sentiment stayed in neutral territory, with the Fear and Greed Index at 58, even as commentary pointed to Bitcoin cutting its September gains in half during what had been dubbed 'Uptober'.

ETFs & institutional

US Bitcoin and Ether ETFs posted their worst stretch since June, with Bitcoin funds shedding $485 million in a single day and October outflows across bitcoin and Ether products swelling toward $1 billion. Ether ETFs extended their outflow streak to nine days even as Solana funds snapped a record 14-week inflow run, and XRP ETFs were reported as the only crypto funds with inflows on at least two separate sessions. Elsewhere, JPMorgan estimated $50 billion has flowed into crypto this year, Standard Chartered said it would expand institutional crypto and RWA custody to Singapore, and MARA transferred $81.1 million in Bitcoin to Galaxy Digital as it pivots toward AI.

Regulation & policy

The CFTC moved to fold event contracts into swaps regulations and proposed rules separating prediction markets from gambling, as the NFL backed New Jersey in asking the Supreme Court to intervene against Kalshi. The UK sanctioned three crypto exchanges, including Cryptomus and TokenSpot, over alleged Russia links, while Greece said it plans a 10% crypto capital-gains tax, down from 15% floated in June. ESMA gave crypto platforms three months to remove unauthorised stablecoins from EU venues.

Stablecoins

Total stablecoin market capitalisation was little changed at $284.0 billion, down 0.5% on the week, with USDT at $184.1 billion and USDC at $73.0 billion. Tether signed a deal with Kazakhstan's central bank to explore a stablecoin and tokenised assets, while Samsung said it would add USDC transfers via Solana for US Galaxy Wallet users.

What we’re watching

Markets head into US CPI on Wednesday and producer prices on Thursday against a backdrop of elevated rate sensitivity following this week's bond-market volatility. Continued ETF flow data, particularly whether Ether outflows extend beyond nine days, will remain in focus alongside fallout from the Ledger security incident.
